Building a Yarn Stash You'll Actually Use
April 30, 2026 · 4 min read

The healthiest stashes are curated, not accumulated. A handful of versatile bases in colors you love will always beat a bin of single souvenir skeins.
Keep a base layer: a worsted wool for hats and mittens, a DK for sweaters, and a fingering for socks and shawls. These cover most impulse cast-ons.
When you buy sweater quantities, buy them for a specific pattern and store the printed pattern with the yarn. Future you will remember the plan.
Store everything where you can see it. Clear bins, labeled by weight, with a lavender sachet for moths. A stash you can browse is a stash you will knit from.
