Choosing the Right Yarn for Lace Knitting

Lace is the one place where yarn choice can make or break a project. A yarn with too much fuzz will swallow your yarn overs, while something too crisp can leave the fabric stiff and papery.
Start with fiber. Merino and merino blends have enough elasticity to survive aggressive blocking, and they relax into a soft drape afterwards. Silk blends add weight and shine, which helps lace panels hang instead of bunching. Mohair is beautiful but forgiving in the wrong way — it hides mistakes and makes ripping back painful.
Next, think about ply. A tightly spun 3-ply or 4-ply gives crisp stitch definition, so every decrease reads clearly. Single-ply yarns bloom more and blur the edges of the motif, which is lovely for shawls with a soft, romantic feel.
Finally, swatch and block your swatch. Unblocked lace always looks like a crumpled mess. Pin it out, let it dry completely, and only then judge the fabric. If the yarn overs open up into clean, even holes, you have a match.
